On November 27, according to foreign media slashgear, Volvo cars announced to invest in an optical imaging start-up company called spectralics, which is committed to developing a new technology that can turn the whole windshield into a display. This technology is more perfect than the current HUD display. Volvo said it helps to improve the driving experience, keep the driver's line of sight ahead at all times and enhance safety.

Spectralics is developing an optical film that can be applied to transparent surfaces of various shapes and sizes, such as car curved windscreens or windows. The film is a multilayer film complex (MLTC) that can display images.

Volvo's system not only relies on the display film, but also needs the vehicle to be equipped with anti blind area cameras, sensors, etc. the windshield can display navigation information, real-time speed, etc. At night or in the environment with poor line of sight, the front glass can also display the images obtained by car sensors and cameras, which are superimposed on the real picture. This will help the driver to drive safely in dense fog or rain and snow environment, timely judge the obstacles in front and prevent rear end collision.

Foreign media are worried about the cost of this technology. In some high latitudes, strong winds are easy to occur in winter, and the windshield may be damaged by sand and gravel. In addition, in winter, ice from the roof will fall and break the windshield. If the cost of Volvo's display technology is too high, the cost of replacing the front windshield will be very high.
